Illinois

$1,500.00
sold out

My goal when creating a new piece is to allow the painting to develop naturally. I enjoy finding the subject after the process has already started to take shape. This is a method which doesn’t always end in success, each painting is its own journey, and such as in life not all stories have happy endings. Illinois came together much in this way. Beginning with intuitive mark making and using a Hudson sprayer to overly saturate the linen with water, the composition began to take shape as I observed the natural marks the water was etching in the paint. What was forming in front of me was an image from the hundreds of road trips through rural Illinois, making my way home to visit my family in Chicago. Illinois represents places seen but often unnoticed. Frequently mundane, these in between places take residence in our subconscious leaving an indelible yet invisible mark. This painting is about my connection to home and all the in between places; being cognizant of the world around me and the permanent yet undetectable mark it leaves behind.

Medium: Acrylic on Studio Wrapped Raw Linen, Semi-Gloss Protective Varnish

Dimensions: 48”x 36”x 2”
